ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the association of HSP90B1 gene polymorphisms with susceptibility of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) in Chinese Han population. Methods: We recruited 360 SLE patients from hospital as case group and selected 360 age- and sex-matched individuals without autoimmune diseases as control group.Multiplex SNaPshot was used for genotyp-ing.Benjamin-Hamburg(BH) method based on false discovery rate(FDR) standard was used for multiple testing correction. Results:The rs1165681 polymorphism(Crude OR=0.621,95% CI=0.450-0.856,P=0.004;Adjusted OR=0.619,95% CI=0.449-0.855,P=0.004) was significantly associated with SLE risk reduction in dominant model, and the rs10778306 polymorphism(crude OR=0.568, 95% CI=0.328-0.984,P=0.044;Adjusted OR=0.570,95% CI=0.329-0.988,P=0.045) and the rs2722188 polymorphism(Crude OR=0.227,95% CI=0.076-0.681,P=0.008;Adjusted OR=0.227,95% CI=0.076-0.682,P=0.008) were significantly associated with SLE risk reduction in recessive model. After adjustment using BH method, genotype distribution of rs1165681 was statistical difference in two groups(PBH= 0.044).Significant associations were found between four haplotypes of HSP90B1 gene CCATTAGGCAT (OR=0.323,95% CI=0.154-0.680,P=0.002),CCCTTAGGCAC(OR=1.324,95% CI=1.014-1.729,P=0.039),TCCCTAGTCGC (OR=0.465,95% CI=0.221-0.979,P=0.039)and TTCTCGGGCAT(OR=0.443,95% CI=0.224-0.875,P=0.016)and SLE risk. After adjustment using BH method, the frequency of CCATTAGGCAT distribution difference was statistically significant in two groups(PBH= 0.028),but there were no statistical difference in other haplotypes frequency distributions (P>0.05).Conclusion:HSP90B1gene polymorphisms may be associated with the susceptibility of SLE in Chinese Han population.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in displaying the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve.

METHODSSixteen volunteers (9 males and 7 females) and 132 surgically confirmed patients with parotid tumors locating in the deep or shallow lobe of the parotid gland (including 89 with benign and 43 with malignant tumors) underwent MRI using T1WI and T2WI. The transverse images were obtained with the plane tilted 35 degrees to the foot, and the coronal images were acquired using conventional scanning.

RESULTSOn transverse T1WI, the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve displayed low signal with arc-shaped curve in the cross-section, showing a symmetrical dot-like low signal in the coronal plane. The facial nerve in 63% of the patients with parotid tumors in the cross-section could be displayed, but in the coronal plane the proportion reached 83%. MRI could accurately reveal the position of the parotid tumors in the deep or shallow lobe of the parotid gland.

CONCLUSIONMRI can show the major portion of the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve and has important value in locating the parotid tumors and displaying the relationship between the tumor and facial nerve.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo assess the value of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in therapeutic effect evaluation of major depression.

METHODSEighteen patients who met the CCMD-3-R criteria for major depression or bipolar disorder (with depressed episode and total score no less than 18 for 17 items of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) and 13 aged-matched controls were examined by routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI. DTI were used to determine fractional anisotropy (FA) in the preselected white matter regions. All the patients with major depression received treatment with selective serotonine reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) for 6-8 weeks, and the efficacy were assessed by Hamilton Depression Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale.

RESULTSThe total response rate to fluoxetine was 67%, and significant improvement was observed in 56% of the patients while 33% failed to respond after 8 weeks of treatment. The depressed subjects failing to respond to the treatment had a significant lower FA of the frontal white matter than those responding favorably to the treatment and the healthy control subjects.

CONCLUSIONDTI may identify the microstructural abnormality in the white matter, which is associated with a low remission rate of major depression.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the correlation of multislice spiral CT features and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expressions and microvessel density (MVD) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

METHODSFourth-seven patients with pathologically confirmed RCC were examined by multislice spiral CT, and VEGF expressions and MVD of the RCC and the adjacent normal tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry with specific monoclonal antibodies.

RESULTSVEGF expression and MVD in the RCC and adjacent normal tissues increased with the pathological grades of RCC (P<0.05), VEGF expression was found to significantly correlate with MVD (r=0.67, P<0.01). The positive expression of VEGF and MVD were associated with the findings by multislice spiral CT scan of tumor size, intratumor necrosis, cystic degeneration, intensity signal, lymph node metastases, invasion of the renal vein or inferior vena cava, and invasion of the adjacent organs or distant metastases (P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONMultislice spiral CT findings can be indicative of the histopathology of RCC, and some CT findings are closely correlated with MVD and VEGF expressions in RCC, which may help evaluate the biological behavior and malignancy of the tumor and predict tumor invasion and metastasis.
